Bronze statue in Berlin.
Fritz Cremer, 1964/65.

O Deutschland, bleiche Mutter! Wie sitzest du besudelt unter den Völkern.
O Deutschland, bleiche Mutter! Wie haben deine Söhne dich zugerichtet.
Bertolt Brecht „Deutschland“ (1933)

O Germany, pale mother! How soiled you are as you sit among the peoples.
You flaunt yourself among the besmirched.
O Germany, pale mother! How have your sons arrayed you that you sit among the peoples a thing of scorn and fear!

I am here.

An art project by my old flatmate Andrea (who made space for me in her flat when I arrived in London 3 years ago) featuring portraits of the people living in one of Hackney's various council estates that are due to be demolished (to make space for some luxury homes just in time for the Olympics).

You can find more about the project, artists and people featured on the walls of Samuel House on their website.

Well done Andrea. :-)

House Ball

(Viewed 1143 times - 0 comments)
Artistic boulder on Bethlehemkirchplatz, dowtown Berlin. Various household items and pieces of furniture seem to be tied to this ball.

This piece of pop art reminds of Bohemian (Czech) refugees who found a new home in Prussia in the 18th century.
The oversized bundle stands for the belongings they brought to this very part of Berlin, the Friedrichstadt, where many of them settled down for good and built their “Church of Bethlehem” (Bethlehemkirche) of which there is nothing left but a floor plan recently paved into the sidewalk.
